What is the Evaluation Working Group?
The Evaluation Working Group is a subset of 15 members of the Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education that are working to develop and implement approaches for measuring the campus climate and gauge effect of policies and actions implemented by other working groups; identify the most effective ways to measure and monitor the climate within an organization; and identify metrics for measuring progress across higher education. The Group is taking on this task by identifying promising practices within and beyond their institutions; engaging and learning from those doing work and developing new approaches; and working to address any on-the-ground barriers, unintended consequences, and challenges that arise in working to implement promising strategies and best practices.
Topics and approaches considered by the Evaluation Working Group include: guidance on conducting campus climate surveys; guidance on how to analyze data from campus climate surveys; guidelines or a framework for producing public reports; guidance on quantitative and qualitative methods for measuring progress; approaches for increasing transparency and/or public release of climate survey results; and systems for monitoring the climate on campus that do not rely on formal reports and investigations. Importantly, all Working Groups are taking into account several cross-cutting topics, including: taking into account the experiences of those with intersecting identities (i.e. that the experience of sexual harassment may likely include other types of harassment and that solutions for white women may not work for women of color); power dynamics between individuals and stakeholder groups; evaluation of efforts; consideration of scaling efforts from one type of institution to others (i.e. determining what are the characteristics of the organization that helped ensure success for specific approaches); and changes from the Department of Education.
The Working Group is led by two Representatives selected from the members of the Working Group for a 1-year term. Current co-leads of this group are Kelley Bonner (NOAA) and Mariam Lam (UC Riverside).
What is the Evaluation Working Group currently working on?
The Evaluation Working Group is organized into subgroups based on the current interests of the working group representatives. Following completion of the current subgroup activities, the working group members may reorganize into different subgroups. There are currently two active subgroups in the Evaluation Working Group: (1) Using Climate Data, and (2) Evaluating Interventions. These subgroups were formed in fall of 2021 and are currently working to identify their next areas of focus.
