New Voices in Sciences, Engineering and Medicine

Project Scope:

A National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine pilot initiative, “New Voices in Sciences, Engineering and Medicine” (SEM), will engage an initial diverse group of outstanding early-career SEM leaders to provide new perspectives on issues and public communication modes for the National Academies, and to help identify and try out activities designed to expand the diversity of expertise (ethnic, geographical, disciplinary, gender, and age) that is engaged in the convening and advisory functions of the National Academies. With guidance from a senior advisory committee appointed by the National Academies, the group of 15 SEM leaders will gather over a two-year period to discuss key emerging challenges in science, engineering, and medicine and may become involved in existing Academies’ projects. They will also convene discussions in diverse academic institutions, engage other young leaders from diverse groups, and attend international events on science policy.

At the completion of the two years, each participant will provide a written personal perspective and evaluation of her/his experience, as well as suggestions for future activities. Participants will also suggest additional diverse individual early-career persons who might be involved in appropriate National Academies planning or advisory and convening activities. The advisory committee, with input from the participants and relevant program units, will summarize the two-year program highlights, contributions towards goals, challenges and possible future directions in a report to the National Academies' leadership.
