Forum on Public-Private Partnerships for Global Health and Safety

Project Scope:

The IOM will establish a Forum on Public-Private Partnerships for Global Health and Safety that will convene health and safety leaders from multi-national companies, as well as governments, foundations, academia, and other elements of civil society to engage in dialogue and discussion for the purpose of illuminating issues and exploring solutions pertinent to health and safety problems of target populations around the world.  The meetings of the Forum will provide a structured, scientifically rigorous, evidence-focused opportunity for multi-sectoral and multi-disciplinary shared learning to strengthen the increasingly common public-private partnerships for global health and safety.  The focus of the meetings will be on the health and safety challenges and issues particular to low- and middle-income countries and on the opportunities for corporations to contribute through public-private partnerships to occupational and environmental health, community public health, and health systems strengthening, as well as research and development.  The Forum will use public workshops to inform its membership and may also commission papers as needed.  .  The Forum will also create and sustain a collaborative community of multi-sectoral leaders dedicated to improving global health and safety for the benefit of employees and communities around the world.  All activities of the Forum will be conducted in accordance with institutional guidelines described in “Roundtables: Policy and Procedures.”

Jo I. Boufford - (Co-Chair)
Jo Ivey Boufford, M.D., is co-chair of the Forum on Public-Private Partnerships for Global Health and Safety, and immediate past President of The New York Academy of Medicine. Effective January 1, 2018, she will become Clinical Professor of Global Public Health at the College of Global Public Health at New York University where she is also Professor of Public Service, Health Policy and Management at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at New York University School of Medicine. She served as Dean of the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University from June 1997 to November 2002. Prior to that, she served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) from November 1993 to January 1997, and as Acting Assistant Secretary from January 1997 to May 1997. While at HHS, she was the U.S. representative on the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO) from 1994–1997. She served in a variety of senior positions and as President of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC), the largest municipal system in the United States, from December 1985 until October 1989. Dr. Boufford was awarded a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowship at the National Academy of Medicine (formerly known as the Institute of Medicine) in Washington, D.C. for 1979–1980. She currently serves on the boards of the United Hospital Fund and the Health Effects Institute. She was elected to membership in the National Academy of Medicine in 1992 and served on its Board on Global Health and Board on African Science Academy Development. She served two four year terms as the Foreign Secretary of the National Academy of Medicine between 2010 and 2014 and was elected to membership for the National Academy of Public Administration in 2015. She received Honorary Doctorate of Science degrees from the State University of New York, Brooklyn, (1992), New York Medical College, (2007), Pace University, (2011) and Toledo University, (2012). She has been a Fellow of The New York Academy of Medicine since 1988 and a Trustee since 2004. Dr. Boufford attended Wellesley College for two years and received her B.A. (Psychology) magna cum laude from the University of Michigan, and her M.D., with distinction, from the University of Michigan Medical School. She is Board Certified in pediatrics.

Clarion E. Johnson - (Co-Chair)
Clarion Johnson, M.D., co-chair of the Forum on Public-Private Partnerships for Global Health and Safety, served as Global Medical Director of ExxonMobil Corporation until his retirement in 2013. Currently, Dr. Johnson is a consultant to ExxonMobil, the immediate past Chair of The Joint Commission’s International and Resource Boards and a member of The Yale School of Public Health Leadership Council. He serves on several boards including the The Bon Secours Hospital System; the Advisory Board of The Yale School of Public Health; and the Board of the Milbank Memorial Fund. Dr. Johnson previously served on the U.S. National Academies’ Board on Global Health. Dr. Johnson also has a HHS Secretary appointment to The NIOSH (National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health) Advisory Board and was a member of Virginia Governor's Task Force on Health reform and co-chair, Insurance Reform Task Force. He is the past chair of Virginia Health Care Foundation, and the Board of City Lights Charter School in Washington, D.C. He served as advisor and lecturer in the Harvard Medical School’s department of continuing education "Global Clinic Course" 2005-2008. In 2013 he received the President’s Award from the Oil and International Petroleum Industry Environment Conservation Association (IPIECA) and Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) for contributions to health and in 2012, he was the recipient of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Award for Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Social Responsibility. In 2011, he received a medal from the French Army’s Institute De Recherche Biomedical for "Project Tetrapole:" a public-private partnership in malaria research. Dr. Johnson is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and member of its Board of Trustees and the Yale School of Medicine. While on active duty in the US Army, he also trained as a microwave researcher at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Occupational Medicine.
Jessica Herzstein
Jessica Herzstein, M.D., M.P.H., a specialist in preventive medicine and occupational and environmental health, is a consultant to global companies and public organizations on worker and community health and safety. She serves as adviser to a public private partnership targeting obesity and diabetes in Mexico. She is a Professorial Lecturer at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health. Dr. Herzstein directed global medical programs for 17 years at Air Products, a Fortune 300 chemical and gases manufacturing company with 20,000 employees. She designed and implemented health programs for workers in many countries; her focus included health crisis planning and management, health surveillance, exposure assessment, community health liaison, and health risk education and behavior change. Dr. Herzstein has recently completed a 5 year term as a member of the US Preventive Services Task Force, a panel of 16 public health and primary care experts who develop evidence based recommendations for clinical preventive services, including screening and counseling. Dr. Herzstein has worked as a medical director at the Department of Defense, a consultant to the Harvard Institute of International Development and the U.S. Agency for International Development, and she served on the faculty at two medical schools in Philadelphia. Dr. Herzstein has written and edited articles and books on environmental medicine, preventive medicine, and occupational health. She currently serves on the Board of Directors at Partners Global, a nongovernmental organization working to implement innovative approaches to transform conflict and achieve sustainable development.

Seema Kumar
Seema Kumar, M.Sc., is Vice President of Innovation, Global Health and Science Policy Communication at Johnson & Johnson (J&J). In this role, Ms. Kumar works to position J&J as a global pioneer in innovation and in research and development (R&D) and a partner of choice. Her responsibilities include communications regarding enterprise innovation and R&D, medical safety and ethics, policy, and global health. She also serves as the communication leader for the Johnson & Johnson R&D Management Committee and the Johnson & Johnson Innovation Centers. Ms. Kumar previously served as the Vice President, Enterprise Innovation and Global Health Communication and as Vice President, Global R&D Communications of the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of J&J. Prior to joining J&J, Ms. Kumar was the Chief Communications Officer at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research/Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Center for Genome Research, the flagship center for the Human Genome Project. Ms. Kumar holds a master of arts degree in science journalism from the University of Maryland, which included a fellowship at the National Cancer Institute, a bachelor of science and communication from the University of Maryland, and a bachelor of science in physics from Stella Maris College, in Madras, India.

John t. Monahan
John T. Monahan, J.D., is a Senior Advisor for Global Initiatives to Georgetown University’s President John J. DeGioia and a Senior Fellow at Georgetown’s McCourt School of Public Policy. In his current position, he advances university-wide initiatives in global health and related areas; chairs a senior-level committee examining the future of Georgetown’s masters programs in international development; co-chairs the Lancet-Georgetown Commission on Global Health and Law; and has been teaching global health courses in Georgetown’s foreign service, law, and nursing schools. Over the course of his distinguished career, Mr. Monahan has played multiple leadership roles in government, diplomacy, politics, philanthropy and academia at the global, national, and state/local levels. He has focused on managing complex health, social service, and development issues and programs affecting low-income and vulnerable populations in the United States and abroad. From 2010-2014, Mr. Monahan served as Special Advisor for Global Health Partnerships at the United States Department of State. Under the leadership of Secretaries Clinton and Kerry, he was the chief architect of the Obama Administration’s successful strategy for reforming the operations and replenishing the finances of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, an innovative public-private partnership based in Switzerland. He served as the US Government’s representative on the Global Fund’s Board; a member of the Board’s Comprehensive Reform Working Group; and Vice-Chair of the Board’s Finance and Operational Performance Committee. In 2009-2010, he was Director of the Office of Global Health Affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services and served as a primary liaison to the World Health Organization’s leadership during the H1N1 influenza pandemic. He also served as Counselor to the Secretary of HHS and represented the Department on the White House-led interagency task force implementing the stimulus legislation in 2009. Mr. Monahan also has extensive experience with domestic public policy issues. From 2000-2007, he served as Senior Fellow at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, a philanthropy dedicated to low-income children in the United States. He advised the Foundation’s senior leadership on federal policy issues; managed its relationship with Living Cities (a public-private partnership devoted to US community development); and supported its use and advocacy of loan guarantees and innovative program-related investment strategies. During the Clinton Administration, Mr. Monahan served as Director of Intergovernmental Affairs at HHS, where he represented the Department in negotiations with governors and state officials regarding scores of Medicaid and welfare demonstration waivers; and as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Children and Families in which he was responsible for assisting in implementation of federal welfare reform. In his varied career, he has also served as the founding Executive Director of Georgetown’s O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law; Legal Counsel to US Senator David Pryor; Law Clerk to US District Court Judge John Grady; and is a veteran of numerous political races, including the Mondale and Clinton presidential campaigns. A member of the Council on Foreign Relations, he serves on the Advisory Committee of the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health and on the boards of the Lever Fund and the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants. Mr. Monahan holds bachelor's and law degrees cum laude from Georgetown University.
Ann Aerts - (Ex Officio Member)
Ann Aerts, M.D., M.P.H., D.T.M., has been Head of the Novartis Foundation since January 2013. The Novartis Foundation has the challenging goals of expanding access to quality healthcare and eliminating diseases such as leprosy and malaria. Before her current role, Ms. Aerts was Franchise Medical Director Critical Care for Novartis Pharma in Basel and Therapeutic Area Head Cardiovascular and Metabolism in Novartis Pharma Belgium. Prior to joining Novartis, she served as Director of the Lung and Tuberculosis Association in Belgium, as Head of the Health Services Department of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Geneva and was Health Coordinator for the ICRC in several countries. Ms. Aerts holds a Degree in Medicine and a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Leuven, Belgium, as well as a Degree in Tropical Medicine from the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium. Ann is a member of the Advisory Boards of the Global Health Group of University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), the OECD Network of Foundations Working in Development (NetFWD), the ITU/UNESCO Broadband Commission for Digital Development, and the Governing Council of the Technology Bank for the LDCs.

George A. Alleyne - (Ex Officio Member)
Sir George Alleyne, M.D., a native of Barbados, is a medical graduate of the University of the West Indies (UWI) where he subsequently pursued an academic career. He worked under Professor John Waterlow in the Tropical Metabolism Research Unit at UWI on the pathophysiology of infant malnutrition and on several aspects of renal intermediary metabolism. He was appointed Professor of Medicine in UWI in 1972 and chair of the Department of Medicine in 1976. He joined the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1981, became Director on 1 February 1995 and after re-election in 1998, completed a second four-year term on 31 January 2003. In 2003 he was elected Director Emeritus of PAHO. From February 2003 until December 2010 he was the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean. From 2003 to 2017 he was Chancellor of the University of the West Indies and was a visiting professor at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University also from 2003 to 2017. In December 2017 he was elected Chancellor Emeritus of the University of the West Indies. Sir George has received numerous awards in recognition of his work, including honorary degrees and prestigious decorations and national honors from many countries of the Americas. In 1990, he was made Knight Bachelor by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for his services to Medicine. In 2001, he was awarded the Order of the Caribbean Community, the highest honor that can be conferred on a Caribbean national.

Natasha Bilimoria - (Ex Officio Member)
Natasha Bilimoria, M.S.W., is the Director of U.S. Strategy for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance where she leads efforts to mobilize public and private sector support in the United States to fund childhood immunisation in the world’s poorest countries. Her leadership experience and relationships with U.S. government officials, non-governmental organizations and the private sector are instrumental in furthering Gavi’s visibility in the United States and throughout the global health community. Prior to taking on this role in 2013, Ms. Bilimoria served for seven years as President of Friends of the Global Fight, where she led U.S. efforts to support the lifesaving work of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. Previously, she held several positions at the Elisabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Ms. Bilimoria also served in the Clinton Administration at the White House and in the Treasury Department, where she worked on domestic economic development issues. She was a member of the Obama-Biden Presidential Transition Team’s state, national security, defense, intelligence and arms control agency review team and led a comprehensive review and analysis of all U.S. global health programs. Ms. Bilimoria serves on the Board of Directors for Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, TB & Malaria, the U.S. Fund for the Global Fund.

Simon Bland - (Ex Officio Member)
Simon Bland, M.S., CBE, joined UNAIDS in 2013 as their Director in NY. Prior to joining UNAIDS, Mr. Bland was a senior civil servant in the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) and, most recently, headed their Global Funds Department. In this role he was responsible for the United Kingdom’s policies, programmes, financial management and shareholder relations with Global Funds and Innovative Finance in health and education. He represented the United Kingdom on the Boards of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, GAVI, UNITAID and the Global Partnership for Education. From 2011 to 2013, Mr. Bland was Chair of the Board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and oversaw a substantial transformation culminating in the introduction of a new funding model and strengthened partnership approach. Mr. Bland’s early background was in marine sciences and natural resources management, later branching out into development economics and management. He has spent most of the last thirty years working in developing countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific. He has led DFID country programmes in Russia, Ukraine, Kenya and Somalia before moving to Geneva to work on global health, education and humanitarian affairs. Mr. Bland now sits on the Boards of Roll Back Malaria, Malaria No More (UK), the Global Health Council and serves on the Programme Advisory Council of Health Right International. Mr. Bland was made a Commander of the British Empire in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2013 for service to Global Health.
Cara Bradley - (Ex Officio Member)
Cara Bradley is PATH’s chief corporate engagement officer, leading its global strategy to expand industry partnerships to solve the world’s most challenging health problems. Her team brings together programs, countries, companies, funders, and policymakers to drive PATH's corporate engagement activities, with a focus on multisector partnerships that take innovation to scale and improve life for hundreds of millions of people every year. Ms. Bradley is a passionate global health advocate who has committed her career to advancing a rightsbased approach to development. She joined PATH in 2015 to help expand and deepen its private-sector relationships, with a focus on shared-value partnerships that benefit society as well as the bottom line. Ms. Bradley has more than 12 years of experience developing groundbreaking industry partnerships and expanding the capacity of international organizations to partner with industries globally. Before joining PATH, she led a multidisciplinary European fundraising division at International Rescue Committee. Prior to that, she worked at UNICEF, WaterAid, and other leading nongovernmental organizations. A native of the United Kingdom, Ms. Bradley earned her B.A. from Kent University.

Stephen Chege - (Ex Officio Member)
Stephen Chege, LL.M, is the Director, Corporate Affairs at Safaricom Limited, a leading communications company in Africa and pioneer of M-PESA, the world’s most developed mobile payment system. With a deep background in regulatory and legal affairs, Mr. Chege is responsible for the Corporate Affairs Division which provides strategic support functions to Safaricom. He leads the Regulatory & Public Policy, Legal & Secretarial Services; Corporate Responsibility (incorporating the Safaricom & MPESA Foundations, Social innovation as well as Sustainability Reporting); and the Corporate Communications functions. In his role, Mr. Chege is responsible for advising the company on matters relating to licensing, legal affairs, regulation and public policy. He is primarily responsible for external engagement between the company and its external stakeholders, framing strategic initiatives within the policy environment to provide the right environment for Safaricom’s operations and ensure good governance for Safaricom. Mr. Chege harnesses a wealth of telecommunications professional experience spanning over 14 years in various organizations including Vodafone Group UK. An advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Mr. Chege holds a Masters in Law (LL.M) in International Trade & Investment Law from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Laws degree (LL.B) from the same University. Mr. Chege is currently a member of a Taskforce established under the Kenyan ICT Ministry to develop the Policy Framework and Critical Infrastructure Bill for the protection of critical ICT infrastructure.

Robert Clay - (Ex Officio Member)
Robert Clay is vice president of Global Health for Save the Children, which gives children around the world a healthy start, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. He works with the Department of Health and Nutrition to build upon Save the Children's sustained efforts to improve the health and nutritional status of women and children. Prior to joining Save the Children, Mr. Clay was the deputy assistant administrator in the Bureau for Global Health at USAID, where he was intimately involved in USAID's efforts to drive innovation and leverage technology. He also chaired the Saving Mothers, Giving Life Leadership Council, and represented the U.S. government on the GAVI executive board.

Brenda D. Colatrella - (Ex Officio Member)
Brenda D. Colatrella, M.B.A., is Associate Vice President, Corporate Responsibility, at Merck & Co., Inc. where she is responsible for the development, implementation and reporting of Merck's global corporate responsibility approach on environmental, social, ethical and governance issues in alignment with the company's business strategy. She also oversees several of Merck's global health partnerships and relationships with key partners and is involved in the development of policies that help to expand access to medicines, vaccines and quality health care particularly in the developing world and emerging markets. She also serves as President of the Merck Foundation, a U.S. based private charitable foundation established in 1957 that is funded entirely by Merck and is Merck’s chief source of funding support for qualified nonprofit charitable organizations. Ms. Colatrella is also the President of the Merck Patient Assistance Foundation which provides free Merck medications and adult vaccines to eligible individuals in the United States who need specific Merck medicines and vaccines but do not have access to them through insurance coverage and who cannot afford to pay for them. Prior to leading the corporate responsibility function, Ms. Colatrella was Executive Director, Global Health Partnerships, within the Office of Corporate Responsibility, responsible for key global health and access partnerships and Merck's relationships with a wide range of stakeholders in the global health arena. She also held the position of Executive Director, HIV Policy and External Affairs for the Europe, Middle East, Africa, Canada region, with a primary focus on driving Merck and industry initiatives to improve access to HIV/AIDS care and treatment in the developing world, and was Senior Vice-President, The Merck Foundation, and Senior Director, Office of Contributions, responsible for all Foundation and corporate cash grant making activities, product donations programs (e.g., the Merck Mectizan Donation Program). Ms. Colatrella received her B.A. from Muhlenberg College, summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and her M.B.A. from New York University’s Stern School of Business where she was the recipient of the Dean’s Award. She has published several articles on the Mectizan Donation Program, the role of the private sector in global health, and successful public-private partnerships.
Bruce Compton - (Ex Officio Member)
Bruce Compton is senior director of international outreach for the Catholic Health Association of the United States. He is based in the association's St. Louis office. Mr. Compton is responsible for assisting and supporting CHA-member organizations in their outreach activities in the developing world. His duties include facilitating collaboration among CHA-member organizations and others, seeking to enhance the impact of international ministries. Additionally, he is responsible for education regarding international outreach issues and encouraging CHA members' participation in various activities of international ministry. Mr. Compton lived in Haiti from 2000 to 2002, and he continued to work in support of health missions in the developing world after he returned to the U.S. He did so in his capacity as founding president and chief executive of Springfield, Ill.–based Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach, a ministry organization bringing surplus medical supplies from Midwest hospitals to medical missions in the developing world.
Kate Dodson - (Ex Officio Member)
Kate Dodson, M.A., is the Vice President for Global Health Strategy at the United Nations Foundation. In this role, Ms. Dodson works to ensure that the UN Foundation is delivering on its commitments to address the health-related Sustainable Development Goals, and builds synergies with UN agencies and other key multilateral partners. Previously, she spent several years as the UN Foundation's Director of Global Health, and has also served as Executive Director of Program Integration, focused on crossdepartment and cross-issue collaboration. Kate spent her first five years at UNF in the biodiversity/sustainable development program in various positions, including Deputy Director of Sustainable Development. Ms. Dodson has many years of experience working on global development and has traveled, worked and studied in several countries. She has a master’s degree with distinction from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and a bachelor's degree with departmental honors from Bates College in Maine.

Renuka Gadde - (Ex Officio Member)
Renuka Gadde, M.B.A., is Vice President, Global Health, at Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD). She provides overall leadership for BD’s Global Health initiatives in emerging and developing countries. Her responsibilities include extensive external engagement with ministries of health, international agencies and non-government organizations, and significant internal engagement across BD’s units, geographies and functions in support of strategies, products and programs that advance equitable access to health for all people. Ms. Gadde leads key Public Private Partnerships including a program with PEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief) for strengthening laboratory systems. The “Labs for Life” partnership is a multi-country program in its 9th year of implementation. The program aims at building laboratory quality and capacity to provide better care and improve access. Key partners in this collaboration are CDC and Country Ministries of Health. Ms. Gadde also leads the team engaged in developing a Maternal Newborn Health (MNH) strategy for the company to address unmet health needs through technology interventions. This MNH strategy is based on the principles of expanding access and the execution is through a collaborative business model with health agencies. In this role, Ms. Gadde has been actively engaged with the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, the Private Sector constituency for the Global Financing Facility, and the Every Woman Every Child marketplace. As part of advancing appropriate policies and technologies for health, Ms. Gadde engages with international health agencies such as WHO, UNICEF, CDC, UNAIDS, Global Fund, FIND, CHAI, etc. Ms. Gadde began her career with BD in 1997. She holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration. Her early career experiences with BD involved managing the Immunization initiative for the Asia Pacific region. Ms. Gadde gained a first-hand experience of dealing with a public health issue, where business engagement with agencies such as UNICEF, GAVI, WHO and Governments was essential. BD (Becton Dickinson and Company) is a medical technology company that serves healthcare institutions, life science researchers, clinical laboratories, industry and the general public. BD manufactures and sells a broad range of medical supplies, devices, laboratory equipment and diagnostic products. BD is headquartered in the United States and has offices in more than 50 countries worldwide.
Roger I. Glass - (Ex Officio Member)
Roger Glass, M.D., Ph.D., was named Director of the Fogarty International Center and Associate Director for International Research by NIH Director Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D., on March 31, 2006. Dr. Glass graduated from Harvard College in 1967, received a Fulbright Fellowship to study at the University of Buenos Aires in 1967, and received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School and his M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health in 1972. He joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1977 as a medical officer assigned to the Environmental Hazards Branch. He was a Scientist at the International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research in Bangladesh from 1979-1983 and returned to Sweden where he received his doctorate from the University of Goteborg. In 1984, he joined the National Institutes of Health Laboratory of Infectious Diseases, where he worked on the molecular biology of rotavirus. In 1986, Dr. Glass returned to the CDC to become Chief of the Viral Gastroenteritis Unit at the National Center for Infectious Diseases. Dr. Glass's research interests are in the prevention of gastroenteritis from rotaviruses and noroviruses through the application of novel scientific research. He has maintained field studies in India, Bangladesh, Brazil, Mexico, Israel, Russia, Vietnam, China and elsewhere. His research has been targeted toward epidemiologic studies to anticipate the introduction of rotavirus vaccines. He is fluent and often lectures in five languages. Dr. Glass has received numerous awards including the prestigious Charles C. Shepard Lifetime Scientific Achievement Award presented by the CDC in recognition of his 30-year career of scientific research application and leadership, and the Dr. Charles Merieux Award from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases for his work on rotavirus vaccines in the developing world. Dr. Glass received the 2015 Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Award for his many contributions to improving children’s health worldwide, including novel scientific research for the prevention of gastroenteritis from rotaviruses and noroviruses. Dr. Glass was also the recipient of the 2016 Cura Personalis Award from Georgetown University. This award honors individuals whose outstanding contributions to human health are guided by compassion and service. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine. Dr. Glass has co-authored more than 600 research papers and chapters. He is married to Barbara Stoll, M.D., the H. Wayne Hightower Distinguished Professor in the Medical Sciences and Dean of the University of the Texas Medical School at Houston, and the father of three children: Nina, Michael and Andy Glass.

Allison Goldberg - (Ex Officio Member)
Allison Goldberg, Ph.D., is the Executive Director of the AB InBev Foundation. Dr. Goldberg, who held the position of Vice President, Strategy & Programs from May 2017 to July 2018, is responsible for overseeing the execution of the Foundation’s strategic vision according to its guiding principles of transparency, supporting local leadership, and maintaining academic integrity. Dr. Goldberg also serves as Secretary of the Foundation’s of Board of Directors. Previously, Dr. Goldberg was Director of Global Corporate Affairs at AB InBev. In this role, Dr. Goldberg worked across AB InBev and with outside experts to develop the architecture and strategy for the Global Smart Drinking Goals (GSDG) and the Together for Safer Roads initiative, a cross-industry coalition working to improve road safety globally. She represented AB InBev on the Health and Medicine Division (previously the Institute of Medicine) Forum on Public-Private Partnerships for Global Health & Safety and managed AB InBev’s Global Advisory Council, an external board of global thought and business leaders, which provided insight and guidance to the company’s executive leadership on issues critical to the business and the world. Prior to joining AB InBev, Dr. Goldberg worked at the consulting firm Abt Associates and held positions as a researcher at the International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP) at Columbia University. She also served as a consultant in Johnson and Johnson’s Global Health Division, working with the Vice President of Global Health, to promote public health policy programs. A recognized expert in public health, Dr. Goldberg earned an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Public Health and Political Science from Columbia University and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Michigan. She is a 2015 Aspen Ideas Festival Scholar and holds an academic appointment as Lecturer at Columbia University.
James M. Jones - (Ex Officio Member)
Jim Jones is the Executive Director of the ExxonMobil Foundation. In this capacity, he oversees ExxonMobil Foundation’s major grant-making programs in global health (specifically in the fight against malaria), women’s economic opportunities and U.S. math and science education. Previously, he directed ExxonMobil’s global brand, advertising and integrated communications work. Prior to work in the private sector, Mr. Jones was the founding executive vice president at the Vaccine (now GAVI) Fund. He also was vice president of programs and policy at the Children’s Defense Fund where he oversaw the organization’s work on education, juvenile justice, child welfare and health. For a dozen years, Mr. Jones served in various capacities in the U.S. Congress, including director of communications and policy to Senator John F. Kerry, for whom he drafted major global health legislation including the original federal spending authorizations for many product development partnerships. Mr. Jones is a graduate of Georgetown University and Oxford University and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study international economics at the University of Munich.

Rebecca Martin - (Ex Officio Member)
Rebecca Martin, Ph.D., is the Director of the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr Martin has worked both domestically and internationally in immunization, HIV, and health system strengthening and now leads CDC’s global efforts to protect and improve health globally through science, policy, partnership, and evidence-based public health action. Dr. Martin has over 18 years of experience working in international health. Since 1991, Dr. Martin has worked in the global health arena and has had CDC assignments in Kenya, Tanzania, and Denmark (2002-2011). She was detailed to the WHO African Regional Office from 2002-2006, based in Kenya as a senior epidemiologist in the inter-country immunization program office for eight east African countries. From 2006-2008, Dr. Martin served as Program Director for Strategic Information and Human Resources for Health with the CDC Country Office in Tanzania. She led and implemented studies, in partnership with the ministry of health, to measure and evaluate the HIV/AIDS epidemic and strengthen national capacity to respond. Between 2008 and 2011, Dr. Martin was detailed to the WHO European Regional Office as the Regional Advisor for Immunization where she spearheaded regional efforts to strengthen immunization and surveillance systems, provide evidence for the introduction of new vaccines, achieve the goal of measles and rubella elimination, and maintain the region’s polio-free status. Most recently from 2012 to 2016, Dr. Martin served as the Director of the CGH Global Immunization Division, which leads CDC’s global polio eradication efforts, accelerated disease control for vaccine-preventable diseases, introduction of new and underutilized vaccines, and the strengthening of immunization systems. Dr. Martin began her career with CDC in 1997 in the National Immunization Program, Epidemiology and Surveillance Division. Prior to joining CDC, she worked at the Maryland Department of Hygiene and Mental Health in Baltimore Maryland as the immunization program epidemiologist leading efforts to increase vaccination coverage, conducting outbreak investigations, coordinating the development and introduction of Maryland’s immunization registry, and supporting the state’s Vaccines for Children Program. Dr. Martin received her Doctorate of Philosophy from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in international health with a focus in infectious disease epidemiology. Over the past 15 years, she has collaborated with multilateral organizations and development partners and has worked closely with ministries of health and non-governmental organizations. She has co-authored manuscripts and developed strategic plans, normative guidance and guidelines on immunization strategies, vaccine-preventable diseases and surveillance methods for both immunization and HIV.
Eduardo Martinez - (Ex Officio Member)
Eduardo Martinez, J.D., is President of the UPS Foundation. The UPS Foundation leads the global citizenship programs and initiatives for UPS. As President, Mr. Martinez is responsible for the operations and management of its global philanthropic, employee engagement and corporate relations programs. In addition to his role as President of The UPS Foundation, Mr. Martinez also serves as Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer with responsibilities for the advancement of diversity and inclusion programs which empower over 440,000 UPS employees worldwide including its suppliers, customers and communities at the company. Mr. Martinez joined UPS in 1976, as a package handler in UPS’s South Florida operation where he subsequently entered the management ranks within operations and the Industrial Engineering functions. Mr. Martinez later held senior management positions in the areas of Corporate Accounting and Finance, Risk Management, and Acquisitions. In these capacities, he also served UPS’s subsidiaries and International Region. Mr. Martinez served as corporate counsel in the UPS Legal Department until 2007, where his legal practice included commercial transactions, intellectual property and information technology matters, as well as civil litigation. Prior to assuming the position as President, he served as Director of Philanthropy and Corporate Relations for The UPS Foundation. In addition to his corporate responsibilities, Mr. Martinez served as former Chairperson of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Agenda Council on Humanitarian Response. Currently he serves on the WEF’s Managing the Risk and Impact of Future Epidemics Steering Committee. Mr. Martinez also serves on the UN Global Logistics Cluster’s Logistics Emergency Team Steering Council. Mr. Martinez served as former Chairperson of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Agenda Council on Humanitarian Response. Currently he serves on the WEF’s Managing the Risk and Impact of Future Epidemics Steering Committee. Mr. Martinez also serves on the UN Global Logistics Cluster’s Logistics Emergency Team Steering Council. He serves as Principal, representing UPS on the Corporate Board of Advisors for The National Council of La Raza (NCLR) organization as well as an Executive Advisor Representative to the Points of Light Institutes’ Service Council. Mr. Martinez also serves on the Corporate Development Council for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) and is Chairperson of its Global Corporate Volunteer Council. Mr. Martinez is former co-chair and appointee by the National Academy of Science of its national program, Resilient America. Mr. Martinez serves on the international board of UK-based Business In The Community. Mr. Martinez serves on the Executive Committee of IMPACT 2030, a business led coalition to advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. He serves on the steering council of the Private Sector Roundtable of the Global Health Security Agenda and on the Board of the United Nations public-private sector coalition innovation incubator, Global Humanitarian Lab. Mr. Martinez is on the private sector advisory boards of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Connecting Business Initiative (CBi) and UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, ARISE Board. He also serves on Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed’s Mayoral Service Board. Born in Havana, Cuba, Mr. Martinez immigrated to the United States with his family in 1960. He has lived in Atlanta since 1992, with his wife and three children. Mr. Martinez holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting from the University of Miami, Florida and a Juris Doctor degree from the Nova Southeastern University Law School. A member of the American Bar Association and the Hispanic National Bar Association, he is also a member of the Florida Bar.

Gabriella Morris - (Ex Officio Member)
Gabriella Morris, J.D., is Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at UNICEF USA, where she leads Foundations, Corporate Partnerships and Global Cause Partnerships. In this capacity, she oversees activities of these teams, including strategy, partnership development, resource mobilization, donor relations and alignment with UNICEF programmatic needs. Prior to this appointment she was the Senior Vice President of UUSA’s In Kind Assistance Corporation and the UNICEF Bridge Fund (the “Fund”), an innovative financial tool created by UNICEF USA to fast-track lifesaving assistance to children in need around the world. With over three decades of leadership experience and service in the nonprofit and corporate sectors, she completed over 26 years of service in senior legal, philanthropic and community relations positions at Prudential Financial. For more than seventeen years, she served as President of The Prudential Foundation and Corporate Vice President of Community Resources. In these positions, she directed all aspects of Prudential’s interface with communities, national and global philanthropies, and non-profit organizations, in addition to government, business, academic and community thought-leadership. This included oversight of philanthropy, contributions, social/impact investments, employee volunteerism, community relations and business diversity outreach. She currently serves on boards that reflect her interests and passions, including the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Harlem School of the Arts, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center Women’s Association and the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. She has been a founding board member of many organizations, including United States Artists, the Newark Trust for Education and Brick City Development Corporation. She has previously served on the boards of the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Living Cities. Ms. Morris received an AB in Architecture and Urban Planning and a Certification in African-American Studies from Princeton University, and a JD from The University of Texas School of Law. She has received professional certifications from Harvard Business School’s Executive Education program in Corporate Social Responsibility and from Stanford University’s Center for Social Innovation.
Andrin Oswald - (Ex Officio Member)
Andrin Oswald, M.D., is the Director of Life Sciences Partnerships at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, overseeing the Foundations engagements with corporations. Previously he was CEO and Division Head of Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics from 2008 until its acquisition by GSK in 2015. He was a member of the Executive Committee of Novartis. In September 2013, Dr. Oswald also became Chairman of the Board of the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development. Previously, Dr. Oswald was CEO of Speedel holding AG and Global Head of Pharmaceutical Development Franchises in the Novartis Pharmaceuticals Division, both in Switzerland. Dr. Oswald joined Novartis in 2005 as Assistant to the Chairman and CEO. Before his appointment as head of Development Franchises, he served as head of the Country Pharmaceuticals Organization (CPO) and Country President for Novartis in South Korea. Dr. Oswald joined Novartis from McKinsey & Company, Switzerland, where he was an Associate Principal. He is a board member of the Global Health Investment Corporation (GHIC), and an Investment Committee member of the Global Health Investment Fund (GHIF). From 2012 to 2013 he was a member of the Global Agenda Council on Catastrophic Risks of the World Economic Forum. Between 2002 and 2003, he also served as a Delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Nepal. Dr. Oswald holds a doctorate in medicine from the University of Geneva.

N. R. Rabinovich - (Ex Officio Member)
Regina Rabinovich, M.D., M.P.H., is the ExxonMobil Malaria Scholar in Residence at Harvard University, and International Scholar at ISGLOBAL at the University of Barcelona. She has over 25 years of experience in global health across research, public health, and philanthropic sectors, with focus on strategy, global health product development, and the introduction and scale-up of tools and strategies resulting in impact on endemic populations. From 2003-2012, Dr. Rabinovich served as Director of the Infectious Diseases division at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, overseeing the development and implementation of strategies for the prevention, treatment, and control of infectious diseases of particular relevance to malaria, pneumonia, diarrhea, and neglected infectious diseases. Dr. Rabinovich has served in Chief of the Clinical and Regulatory Affairs Branch at the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), focusing on the development and evaluation of vaccines through a network of US clinical research units. She participated in the Children's Vaccine Initiative, a global effort to prevent infectious diseases in children in the developing world. In 1999, Dr. Rabinovich became director of the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative, a project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to advance efforts to develop promising malaria vaccine candidates. She serves on the boards of AERAS, a non-profit biotech focused on development of vaccines for tuberculosis, the Sabin Vaccine Institute, and the Catholic Medical Mission Board. She is the President-Elect of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Dr. Rabinovich holds a medical degree from Southern Illinois University and a Masters of Public Health degree from the University of North Carolina.
Scott C. Ratzan - (Ex Officio Member)
Scott C. Ratzan, M.D., M.P.A., is Senior Fellow at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business & Government at Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Dr. Ratzan has three decades of pioneering accomplishments in the U.S. and globally in health communication, health literacy and strategic diplomacy. He is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Health Communication: International Perspectives. He has been engaged in multidisciplinary activities related to global health including as President of the ABInBev Foundation and Vice President of Global Health and Social Impact at ABInBev. Dr. Ratzan was at Johnson & Johnson for eleven years including as Vice President of Global Health at headquarters and in Brussels as VP Government Affairs & Policy. Before his private sector engagement, he worked at the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in Washington DC, designing the framework for the Bureau of Global Health communication efforts. He launched his career in Boston spending a decade in academia as a professor and Founding Director of the Emerson-Tufts Master’s Program in Health Communication. In addition to a number of publications in the global health field, he is the co-author of the definition of health literacy adopted by the US Government and incorporated in the Affordable Care Act. Recently, he has served as Co-Chair of the UN Secretary General's Every Woman Every Child Innovation Working Group, on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Board of Scientific Counselors, Office of Infectious Disease and on the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Well-Being and Mental Health. Dr. Ratzan has an M.D. from the University of Southern California, an M.P.A. from the Harvard Kennedy School, and an M.A. in Communication from Emerson College. His academic appointments include Adjunct Professor at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, Tufts University School of Medicine, and George Washington University School of Public Health.

B.T. Slingsby - (Ex Officio Member)
BT Slingsby, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., is the founding CEO and Executive Director of the Global Health Innovative Technology Fund (GHIT Fund). The GHIT Fund is a public-private partnership in Japan between the Government of Japan (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare), 16 life science companies (Astellas, Chugai, Daiichi Sankyo, Eisai, Fujifilm, Shionogi, Takeda, Sysmex, Otsuka, GSK, Johnson & Johnson, Kyowa Hakko Kirin, Merck, Mitsubishi Tanabe, Nipro, and Sumitomo Dainippon), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Wellcome Trust, and United Nations Development Programme. Launched in April 2013 with a commitment of over US$100 million, GHIT has grown to manage over US$350 million with a portfolio of over 50 investments in the research and development of novel Japanese innovations for global health. The combination of Japan's government and its pharmaceutical industry—the second largest in the world—brings a powerful engine of knowledge and innovation to the development of medications for the developing world. Prior to the GHIT Fund, he was global head for access and strategy for the developing world at Eisai Co. & Ltd. Dr. Slingsby is adjunct professor at Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine and the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Medicine and has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles in English and Japanese in journals including Journal of General Internal Medicine, Journal of Public Health, and the Lancet. He graduated from Brown University, earned his Masters and Doctorate from Kyoto University, and the University of Tokyo, and received his Medical Doctorate from The George Washington University.
Shawn Standridge - (Ex Officio Member)
Shawn Standridge, M.S., M.B.A., D.O., is Corporate Medical Director at the Procter & Gamble Company. Prior to this role, he was Medical Leader of the Baby, Family and Feminine Care division at P&G. Prior to joining P&G, he served as the Center Medical Director at Concentra Urgent Care in Kentucky. He holds an M.S. in Environmental Health from the University of Cincinnati, an M.B.A. in management from Stephens College, and a D.O. in Medicine from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences.
Katherine Taylor - (Ex Officio Member)
Katherine Taylor, Ph.D., M.Sc., is the Associate Director and Director of Global Health Training with an appointment in the Biological Sciences Department at the University of Notre Dame. In her current position, she serves as the university liaison for a number of international global health partnerships. She is also actively involved in training and global health education as the Director of the Master of Science in Global Health Program. Dr. Taylor earned a B.Sc. from Purdue University, M.Sc. from University of Notre Dame, and Ph.D. from the Vrije University, Brussels. Her research experience includes 14 years in Kenya, initially employed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control on malaria research projects in collaboration with the U.S. Army and the Kenya Medical Research Institute. The last 10 years in Kenya, she worked on the immunology of African trypanosomes in livestock at the International Livestock Research Institute and served as the Project Leader for Immunology and Vaccine Development. Dr. Taylor left Kenya in 2001 to join the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases as a Program Officer. There, she developed and led a new Drug Development Section within the Office of Biodefense that funded a portfolio of contracts for the development of new drugs against high priority biothreats. Dr. Taylor is a past chair of the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Committee for Global Health, serves on the Program Committee of the Society and serves on the board of Catholic Medical Mission Board.

T. Andrew Wilson - (Ex Officio Member)
T. Andrew (Andy) Wilson is the Director of Corporate Engagement at PATH, leading private sector engagement and helping sustain the organization’s mission of health equity. His team builds strategic alignment between leading life sciences and technology companies and PATH’s global capabilities in health care innovation and delivery. For more than twenty-five years, Andy’s work has focused on public-private partnerships and international economic development. Prior to working for PATH, he headed global innovation partnerships for Intellectual Ventures, building shared value approaches to address global challenges in healthcare and urbanization. He previously served as a corporate executive in Eastman Kodak, responsible for global operations, corporate strategy, and digital transformation. His experience ranges from general management of multi-billion dollar businesses and investment projects in Asia and Europe, to work as a Foreign Service Officer in the U.S. Department of State. Andy holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, and in 2012, he completed graduate studies in public policy and international development at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
Tadataka Yamada - (Ex Officio Member)
Tadataka (Tachi) Yamada, M.D., is a Venture Partner with Frazier Healthcare Partners. Prior to joining Frazier, he was Executive Vice-President, Chief Medical & Scientific Officer and a Board Member of Takeda Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Yamada has served as President of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Global Health Program. In this position, he oversaw grants totaling more than $9 billion in programs directed at applying technologies to address major health challenges of the developing world including TB, HIV, malaria and other infectious diseases, malnutrition and maternal and child health. He was formerly Chairman, Research and Development and a Member of the Board of Directors of GlaxoSmithKline; before that, he was Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine and Physician-inChief at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Dr. Yamada holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Stanford University and obtained his M.D. from New York University School of Medicine. In recognition of his contributions to medicine and science he has been elected to membership in the National Academy of Medicine (US), the Academy of Medical Sciences (UK) and the National Academy of Medicine (Mexico) and he has received an honorary appointment as Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE). He is a Past-President of the Association of American Physicians and of the American Gastroenterological Association and he has served as a member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology and the Advisory Committee to the Director of the National Institutes of Health. He is the Past Vice-Chair of the Council of the National Academy of Medicine and Chairman the Board of Directors of the Clinton Health Access Initiative.

An ad hoc planning committee under the auspices of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will plan a two-day public workshop to explore opportunities to improve the health of communities in urban settings, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The workshop will apply a broad definition of health to address its multiple determinants and potential for inclusive multi-sectoral engagement. Workshop presentations and discussion topics will include approaches to and examples of multi-sectoral engagement at the city-level for health promotion with an examination of governance structures, public and private sector participation and contributions, inclusion of stakeholders outside of the health care sector, and evaluation and assessment. Additional workshop presentations and discussion topics may include:

- The impacts of urban health threats on the health and safety of employee populations, and examples of how the private sector is mitigating them;
- Opportunities for addressing urban inequality through city-level public-private partnerships for health; 
- The application of digital and smart cities technology to address urban health and promote multi-sectoral engagement. 

The planning committee will develop the workshop agenda, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate the discussions. Experts will be drawn from the public and private sectors as well as academic institutions to allow for multi-lateral, evidence-based discussions. A proceedings of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
