Ocean Basin Drilling for Scientific Research – New Report

Scientific Ocean Drilling: Accomplishments and Challenges, a new report from the National Research Council, examines the scientific discoveries of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, Ocean Drilling Project, and Integrated Ocean Drilling Project -- the first three ocean drilling projects for scientific purposes -- and assesses the potential for such drilling projects in the future.  The report looks at scientific drilling used to analyze core samples of ocean sediments and rock; it does not explore deep-water drilling used for oil and gas exploration.
