Improving Dam and Levee Safety Programs to Enhance Community Resilience

Dam and Levee Safety and Community Resilience: A Vision for Future Practice, a new report from the National Research Council, examines how dam and levee safety programs can be expanded to enhance community response to and recovery from an infrastructure failure.  In particular, the report explores how dam and levee professionals at the local level can become part of broader resilience-focused efforts and how state and federal officials may assist them.  The report also lays out a tool for assessing stakeholder engagement and gauging and documenting a community's progress toward greater resilience.  However, the report neither includes a comprehensive discussion of nor provides guidelines for building community resilience.
