Comment: As part of its semiannual meeting in Washington DC, the National Academies Committee on Law and Justice (CLAJ) will hold a half-day seminar on legal cannabis for the benefit of our sponsor, the National Institute of Justice, and other interested stakeholders. The seminar will focus on research opportunities presented by the current changes and legalizations, and unmet research needs for sound decision-making. A panel of experts will provide background on the regulatory issues around legal cannabis and the available scientific evidence and examine the similarities and contrasts with alcohol and tobacco.

Invited panelists include David Blake, Deputy Attorney General, Colorado State Attorney General's Office; Richard Bonnie, Professor of Medicine and Law and Director, Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy, University of Virginia; Beau Kilmer, Senior Policy Researcher, RAND Corporation; and Mark Kleiman, Professor of Public Policy, University of California, Los Angeles and CLAJ member.

The seminar will take place in a roundtable format intended to exchange information and inform federal representatives. Initial presentations by invited panelists will be followed by a period of discussion among the committee and panelists.
