Harvard professor Calestous Juma will explore the role emerging technologies can play in fostering economic growth and improving human welfare in Africa. Dr. Juma will re-examine opportunities for cooperation on development issues in light of the current global food and financial crises. His talk will focus on the links between economic growth and technological innovation in fields such as agriculture, health, energy, education and environmental management. A question-and-answer session will follow the lecture.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Lecture Room of the National Academy of Sciences building, 2100 C St., N.W., Washington, D.C. Those who cannot attend may listen to a live audio webcast of the event and submit questions using an e-mail form at http://national-academies.org.
Calestous Juma is professor of the practice of international development and director of the Science, Technology, and Globalization Project at the Belfer Center for Scientific and International Affairs, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
The lecture is co-sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences; Brookings Institution; George Washington University; Civilian Research and Development Program; Harvard Kennedy School; the United States Institute of Peace; and the Paul Nitze School for Advanced International Study, Johns Hopkins University.
