Statement by NAS President Ralph J. Cicerone on New Chief Financial Officer Julie Englund
I am delighted to announce that Dr. Julie Englund will be the new Chief Financial Officer of the National Academy of Sciences and National Research Council. She greatly impressed NAE President Charles Vest, IOM President Harvey Fineberg, and me -- as well as our senior staff who have met her -- with her considerable knowledge, experience, and insights on the many complex issues our CFO will be dealing with. We are very pleased that she has accepted our offer and will join us on March 30.
Dr. Englund is currently the treasurer and vice president for finance at the Catholic University of America. She brings considerable experience in not-for-profit institutions, higher education, and government. Currently, she is responsible for a wide range of financial and administrative services at Catholic University, including accounting and budgeting, treasury services, endowment management, procurement, grants and contracts, human resources, internal audit, facilities, and land development. Most recently, she led the construction and financing of a new, environmentally compliant residence hall housing 400 students, which opened in January. She has also been responsible for planning a new mixed-use development on university land, which when completed, will transform the neighborhood and bring significant revenue to the university.
Previously, Dr. Englund served as dean for administration at Harvard Law School, treasurer and vice president for finance and administration at the Brookings Institution, and senior vice president for finance, administration, and membership at the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. She has also held positions at Hood College, and in the U.S. Office of Education (now the Department of Education) including as special assistant to Commissioners of Education John Ottina and T.H. Bell.
Dr. Englund is a graduate of Harvard University where she received her Master of City Planning and her Doctorate in Education in administration, planning, and social policy. She received her undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Briarcliffe College in New York. She is a member of the Board of Trustees and investment committee chair of Wilson College in Pennsylvania. She is an active volunteer on behalf of Harvard University. |
