Seven New Research Opportunities in the Earth Sciences

Ranging from “grand challenge” questions about how Earth’s interior works to understanding the evolution of the planet’s surface, a new report from the National Research Council identifies seven new research opportunities in the earth sciences for the next decade and presents key instrumentation and facilities needed to support them. This report is a follow-up to the 2002 Research Council report Basic Research Opportunities in Earth Science, which helped reshape the National Science Foundation's division of earth sciences.
