Measuring Rape and Sexual Assault -- Report Release Nov. 19

The National Crime Victimization Survey, conducted on an ongoing basis by the U.S. Justice Department, obtains information from victims of a broad set of crimes, including rape and sexual assault. Data from the survey are vital for directing resources for law enforcement and support services, but there is concern that the survey is undercounting rape and sexual assault. Estimating the Incidence of Rape and Sexual Assault, a new report from the National Research Council, examines the survey's design and methodology and recommends best practices for measuring these crimes.

Advance copies of the report will be available to reporters only beginning at noon EST Monday, Nov. 18.  The report is embargoed and not for public release before 11 a.m. EST Tuesday, Nov. 19.  To obtain an embargoed copy, contact the National Academies' Office of News and Public Information; tel. 202-334-2138 or e-mail
