Essential Health Benefits: IOM Report to Release Oct. 7

A new report by the Institute of Medicine, recommends criteria and methods to guide the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in developing and updating a package of essential health benefits that certain plans will have to cover per the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The report does not comment on whether any particular benefits should be included or excluded, as doing so would have been beyond the committee's charge.

Advance copies will be available to reporters only starting at 2 p.m. EDT Thursday, Oct. 6. THE REPORT IS EMBARGOED UNTIL 12:01 A.M. EDT FRIDAY, OCT. 7. Members of the authoring committee will discuss their findings and recommendations in a one-hour public briefing beginning at 11 a.m. EDT on Oct. 7. Those who cannot attend may listen to a live audio webcast and submit questions through a link at http://www.national-academies.org. To obtain a copy of the report, arrange interviews with committee members, or register to attend the public briefing, reporters should contact the National Academies’ Office of News and Public Information; tel. 202-334-2138 or e-mail news@nas.edu.
