Project Scope
|
At the request of the CDC, an IOM committee will conduct a review of the ATSDR (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry) draft reports "Public Health Implications of Hazardous Substances in Twenty-Six U.S. Great Lakes Areas of Concern." Specifically, the committee will review the April 2004 draft; the revised draft (July 2007); and the later revised February 2008 draft to determine: whether the scientific evidence presented in the reports support the reports' conclusions; and whether the reports adequately respond to review.
The IOM committee will conduct a review of the Public Health Implications of Hazardous Substances in the Twenty-Six U.S. Great Lakes Area of Concern with a specific focus on the following:
1. Evaluate the appropriateness of the data sets used and the scientific quality of the data analysis and presentation, and the conclusions drawn from the draft July 2007 report.
2. Determine whether the peer review comments to the draft April 2004 report were adequately addressed in the draft July 2007 report.
3. Assess the scientific validity of the concerns raised by ATSDR regarding the revised draft July 2007 report.
4. Evaluate the appropriateness of the data sets used, and the scientific quality of the data analysis and presentation, and the conclusions drawn in the draft February 2008 report.
5. Evaluate whether subsequent reviewers' comments to the draft July 2007 report were adequately addressed in the February 2008 report.
6. Determine if the draft February 2008 report is scientifically sound.
7. Identify any outstanding areas that need improvement and/or that the committee may have concerns about.
The project is sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
The approximate start date for the project is March 11, 2008.
A report will be issued at the end of the project in approximately 4 months.
