Project Scope

The Committee on National Statistics of the National Research Council (NRC), in collaboration with the Board on Children, Youth, and Families of the NRC and the Institute of Medicine (IOM), and the IOM Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice, proposes to conduct a peer review of the research plan for the National Children's Study (NCS). The purpose of the review is to assess the scientific rigor of the NCS and the extent to which the research plan specifies methods, measures, and collection of data and specimens to maximize the scientific yield of the study. The National Research Council will appoint a panel of approximately 13 experts to conduct the review. Topics to be addressed include: proposed outcomes and hypotheses; proposed measures of environmental exposure, genetic makeup, family and community environment, and personal characteristics; proposed data collection and analysis methods; procedures for ensuring quality control across the study sites; procedures for providing research access to the data while protecting confidentiality; and other aspects of the study research plan. The panel will conduct its work to prepare a written report of its assessment and recommendations over a 9-month period, with 3 additional months for report printing and dissemination. This project is sponsored by NICHD. The approximate start date for the project is April 24, 2007.
Update 4-25-08: The project duration has been extended. The report is expected to be issued by May 15, 2008.
