Project Scope
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) proposes to convene an ad hoc committee of
experts in public health, academic and medical administration, and health
sciences research to identify 1) the public health significance of sleep, sleep
loss, and sleep disorders, 2) barriers and opportunities for improving
interdisciplinary research and medical education and training in the area of
sleep and sleep medicine, and 3) strategies for developing increased support
for sleep medicine and sleep research in academic health centers.

The project began on Oct. 1, 2004 and is sponsored by the Department of Health
and Human Services, the National Sleep Foundation, the Sleep Research Society,
and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

A final report will be issued at the end of the project, in the late spring to
early summer of 2006.
