Project Scope
In order to follow up on one of the key recommendations in the NRC report "Bio2010: Transforming Undergraduate Education for Future Research Biologists" the Board on Life Sciences initiated the National Academies Summer Institute on Undergraduate Education in Biology to engage the life sciences research community in improving undergraduate biology education. The Summer Institutes have engaged research-intensive university and other higher education faculty in an intense, prestigious, and highly interactive series of presentations, discussions, and activities modeled after Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory research courses, which have played a historic role in shaping modern biology.

With a theme of "Life Sciences Education in the Research Context," the Summer Institutes seek to implement practical changes to undergraduate biology education in local settings, develop a community of scientist-educators committed to high-quality undergraduate education in research-intensive environments, and inspire a research agenda that will provide evidence of the efficacy of various approaches to teaching and learning in the life sciences.

Sponsors for Summer Institute and related activities: Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Research Corporation, University of Wisconsin-Madison
