Project Title:

The Value of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences to National Priorities
PIN: DBASSE-Ad Hoc-17-02

Major Unit:

Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education

Sub Unit: Ad Hoc Activity

RSO: Welch-Ross, Melissa

Subject/Focus Area: Behavioral and Social Sciences

Project Scope
The National Academies will appoint an ad-hoc committee of approximately 8 members to focus on the following:

Should the federal government fund research in the social, behavioral, and economic (SBE) sciences at the National Science Foundation? Specific questions to be considered, based primarily on National Academies' products and activities, include:
Do the findings, theories, methods, and tools, from the SBE sciences in general advance the NSF mission of promoting the progress of science; advancing the national health, prosperity, and welfare; securing the national defense; and promoting the progress of science?
Do the SBE sciences advance the missions of other federal agencies?
Do the SBE sciences advance the work of industry and business?
What priorities for NSF investment, if any, are suggested by prior National Academies' reports? What other important elements should be considered as part of a future NSF strategic planning process?

The committee's responses to these questions will provide examples where relevant of how SBE sciences help the nation address societal challenges such as the aging of the population, the technological revolution, work and productivity, crime and violence, terrorism, and the healthy development and well-being of children.

The report is envisioned as a potential resource to solicit comment and input from the broader SBS and constituent communities as part of a more extensive strategic planning process.
