Project Title:

The Continuing Epidemiological Transition in Sub-Saharan Africa
PIN: DBASSE-CEGIS-09-06

Major Unit:

Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education

Sub Unit: Center for Economic, Governance, and International Studies

RSO: Plewes, Tom

Subject/Focus Area: Behavioral and Social Sciences

Project Scope
An ad hoc committee will plan, organize and commission papers for a public workshop on the epidemiological transition in Sub-Saharan Africa. Papers may be commissioned either to develop the workshop or to be presented at the workshop. Following the workshop, a rapporteur will prepare a workshop summary.

The workshop will feature invited presentations and discussion. Among the issues to be considered are the following:

1. A review of the changes that have taken place in the past 15 years in this rapidly moving area of inquiry
2. An update of trends and their implications for health policy
3. The coordination of data analysis across demographic surveillance sites and from new surveys and other sources
4. Methodological challenges for dealing with data from demographic surveillance sites
5. New theoretical perspectives on demographic modeling and their application to modeling the epidemiological transition

The project is sponsored by the National Institute on Aging.

The approximate start date for the project is September 28, 2009.

Update (09-11-2012): No report of the committee will be issued. Instead, the project will result in an individually-authored summary of the presentations and discussions at the workshop held in October 20, 2011 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The summary document will be prepared by a designated rapporteur and posted on the website of the National Academies following its public release.
