Project Scope
|
An ad hoc committee will plan and conduct a public workshop on ways to advance the usability, security, and privacy of computer systems. The workshop will feature invited presentations and discussions on the state-of-art in usability, security, and privacy and how usability contributes to security and privacy. The agenda would include topics on ways to mutually advance objectives in usability and security/privacy especially in cases that replace tradeoffs (e.g., between usability and security) with win-win scenarios. It would also include topics on research opportunities and potential roles for the federal government, academia, and industry and ways to embed usability considerations in research, design, and development related to security, privacy and vice-versa. A report of the workshop will be issued.
Questions the workshop might explore include the following:
- What is the current state of practice in usability and in security/privacy? What can be learned from past examples of success and failure?
- How might advances in usability improve security and privacy?
- What are especially promising areas for further investigation and investment? How would they fit into a roadmap for research?
- How can usability-and its contributions to privacy and security-be measured? How can one derive realistic metrics that don't involve large (and thus costly and time-consuming) user studies? What research would help advance our ability to perform such measurements?
- How can usability be better incorporated into the design, development, and operations of systems in order to enhance security/privacy? When and how should usability professionals be involved in system design and development? How might usability be reflected in the training and education of professionals involved in these activities? How might the visibility of usability be increased within the federal government and more broadly?
- How could more usability researchers and other professionals be stimulated to focus on concerns of security and privacy? How could more security and privacy researchers and other professionals be stimulated to work on usability? What opportunities for exchanging ideas across these communities exist today, and what forums might be useful to establish?
The project is sponsored by the National Science Foundation as well as the National Institute of Science and Technology.
The approximate start date of the project is 9/1/2008.
A report of the workshop will be issued at the end of the project.
