Project Scope
|
A small committee would be convened to prepare updates to a previously-issued figure depicting the role that government-supported, academic, and industrial research play in the formation of major new IT capabilities (as measured by the emergence of billion-dollar information technology industries). The first of these updates would introduce additional billion-dollar industries and other updates as appropriate, together with a brief report in the form of a brochure highlighting the updated tiretracks figure and summarizing key points from past CSTB reports. In addition to the updated figure, it would contain a summary of past work related to the results of IT research; the nature and success of the U.S. research partnership among government, industry, and universities; economic payoffs of research investment; and the evolution of the U.S. IT R&D ecosystem. The report would not contain any new findings and recommendations. An additional update would likely be prepared under the auspices of the committee to provide further refinements and updates. It also would not contain any new findings or recommendations.
The project is sponsored by the National Science Foundation
The approximate start date for the project is fall 2009
The first updated report will be issued in fall 2011. A second updated report, if prepared, is expected to be issued in spring 2012.
