Project Scope
|
An ad-hoc committee will plan and conduct a symposium and author a workshop report on the importance of biodiversity to human well being in the future. The two-day symposium will be held in early 2009, in conjunction with the Darwin bicentenary anniversary. The symposium will feature invited presentations and discussions that will focus on the intersection of biodiversity and ecosystem services through three issues: climate change and energy, trade and invasive species, and food security. The fundamental questions to be addressed at the symposium are as follows:
What are the critical biodiversity and ecosystem services implications of the three following policy issues: climate change/energy security, food security, and invasive species?
What is the state of the science, nationally and internationally, regarding the impact of these issues on biodiversity and ecosystem services, and what are critical gaps in scientific understanding that impede policy making on those issues?
What policy approaches can best incorporate the available scientific data, analyses, and models into the policy process?
The committee will issue a workshop report summarizing the major issues discussed at the symposium.
The project is sponsored by NSF, AAAS, NOAA, USGS, Defenders of Wildlife, and DIVERSITAS
The approximate start date for the project is 08/01/08
A report will be issued at the end of the project, originally estimated at approximately 12 months. The project duration has been extended; the report is expected to be published by February 2012
