Project Scope
|
BCYF will convene an ad hoc committee to organize two public workshops to review the science of adolescence within a life course perspective and to highlight the implications of this research for preventing risk behavior, especially in areas that involve sexual conduct (such as teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections) and substance abuse. This effort will feature invited presentations and discussions and include a set of commissioned papers to highlight strengths and gaps in the research literature and will explore whether additional work, such as an ad hoc consensus study, would be useful. An agenda for the workshop will be developed to address the following topics: the current state of knowledge; lessons learned from providers and practitioners working in this area; and the knowledge, research opportunities, and emerging fields of science that offer promise for the design, implementation, and evaluation of prevention programs for adolescents, as well as in fostering positive assets and relationships that can promote healthy development..
A compilation of individually-authored papers presented at the first workshop will be issued as proceedings of the event. The second workshop will result in a report of the workshop. A dissemination briefing of DHHS officials to review highlights from the workshops will also be convened toward the end of the project.
As warranted after the completion of the workshops, a prospectus on a detailed study of the subject may be prepared for internal review and approval. If appropriate, the commissioned papers may be submitted for publication in an appropriate professional journal.
The approximate start date for the project is November 1, 2008.
The project is sponsored by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
A report is expected to be released at the end of the project in approximately 24 months.
