Project Title:

Computational Thinking for Everyone: A Workshop Series
PIN: CSTB-L-08-01-A

Major Unit:

Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences

Sub Unit: Board on Science Education
Computer Science & Telecommuncations Board

RSO: Lin, Herb

Subject/Focus Area:

Project Scope
Two workshops would explore the nature of computational thinking (CT) and explore its cognitive and educational implications. The first workshop, which would focus on the nature of CT, would invite computer scientists to articulate what "CT for everyone" might mean. It would also involve a few education researchers, cognitive scientists, and educators to keep the discussion grounded in the cognitive realities of children 5-18 years of age. The second workshop, which would focus on the cognitive and educational dimensions of CT, would invite cognitive scientists to explore the cognition of CT (e.g., intellectual readiness to handle different aspects of computational thinking at different ages with different backgrounds) and educators to consider how CT might be incorporated in K-12 education. (The workshop would not consider organizational or institutional considerations related to incorporating CT into the K-12 curriculum.) For each workshop, a report summarizing discussions, comparing and contrasting the different views presented, and identifying commonalities would be prepared under the auspices of the workshop committee and widely disseminated in both the computer science and education communities to stimulate further discussion about CT.

The approximate project start date is 5/1/2008. The project duration is
24 months.

The project will issue two reports, each summarizing a workshop, the
first approximately 12 months after the project start and the second
approximately 22 months after the project start date.
