Project Scope
|
The Committee on National Statistics of the National Research Council is convening an expert panel to recommend future directions for the National Science Foundation's Division of Science Resources Statistics (SRS) Survey of Federal Funds for Research and Development. The NSF is at a crossroads with regard to this survey--although the data have very important uses, the survey is increasingly difficult to conduct in a time of constrained resources, and the technology and procedures underpinning the survey have not been modernized. The panel will build on two previous NRC studies (2000, 2004) that reviewed the federal funds survey as part of the broader SRS portfolio. The panel will reach out to key data users and providers, as well as solicit advice from providers of complementary and competing data sources. The panel will identify common requirements from common uses, consider new data elements and fields that could be useful to collect, and review the taxonomy of fields of science and engineering. The panel's investigation will be supported by a workshop and will be documented in a final report with recommendations.
The project is sponsored by the National Science Foundation
The approximate start date for the project is 12/15/2007.
A report will be issued at the end of the project in approximately 14 months.
Update 6/10/09: The project duration has been extended. The report is expected to be issued by August 31, 2009.
