Project Title:

A Survey of the Scientific Uses of the Radio Spectrum
PIN: BPAX-L-03-04-A

Major Unit:

Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences

Sub Unit: Board on Physics & Astronomy DEPS

RSO: Lang, David

Subject/Focus Area: Earth Sciences; Policy for Science and Technology; Space and Aeronautics

Project Scope
The committee will prepare a report exploring the scientific uses of the radio spectrum which will:
" Portray the science that is currently being conducted using the radio spectrum;
" Identify the emerging and compelling scientific opportunities in the relevant fields; and
" Make recommendations on realizing these opportunities.

The committee will comment on the spectrum usage by the relevant scientific communities but will not make specific recommendations on frequency allocation.

An interim report will address the science currently being conducted using the radio spectrum. The interim report will provide advice to the Spectrum Policy Task Force. The final report will address the science and the broader context, looking ahead at potential and emerging opportunities in the coming years and making recommendations for realizing those opportunities.

The project is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, The Department of Commerce, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
The approximate start date for this project is October 2006.
A report will be issued at the end of the project in approximately 18 months.

NOTE: The project duration was extended with the final report to be released in fal 2009. No interim report was issued.

Project Duration: 18 months
