Project Scope
|
In a fourteen-month project, the NAE will convene a select, international committee to evaluate ideas on the greatest challenges and opportunities for engineering. The committee will draw upon many sources of engineering expertise (including the NAE membership and foreign associates, the NAE's international Frontiers of Engineering program, and engineering societies worldwide) as well as ideas from the broader public.
The NAE committee will create a ranked list of the grand challenges and opportunities for engineering during the world's next few generations. It will also point to engineering or scientific research and innovation that look promising for addressing each challenge as well as suggest currently unmet research needs.
The project outcomes will be presented at an event in Washington, D.C. involving dignitaries from government, the science/technical community, and media/entertainment. Further distribution will come from collaboration with major media outlets and a web site that will be promoted widely, including to schools.
The start date for the project is July 15, 2006. A report with the list of grand challenges and opportunities for engineering will be issued at the end of the project in approximately 14 months.
Note (02-15-2008): The grand challenges for engineering are presented and described in the project website at http://www.engineeringchallenges.org . The committee decided not to rank the grand challenges.
The project is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.
