Project Title:

Advancing Software-Intensive Systems Producibility
PIN: CSTB-L-04-07-A

Major Unit:

Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences

Sub Unit: DEPS Computer Science & Telecommuncations Board

RSO: Millett, Lynette

Subject/Focus Area: Computers and Information Technology

Project Scope
This study will bring together academic and industry researchers, software and
software tool experts, and system integrators to assess the nature of the
national investment in software research, and in particular to consider ways to
revitalize the knowledge and human resource base needed to design, produce, and
employ software intensive-systems of tomorrow's weapons and operations
systems. The study group will assess areas of potential progress in the
technology base, the organization of R&D, technology transition, and long-term
operational issues regarding the maintenance and evolution of software
intensive systems. They will explore ways to characterize issues of platform
dependencies that may affect the generality of approaches, and strategies for
dealing with them. They will examine ways in which to characterize the
potential gains to be made, including return on investment, from broad and
sustained support of future advances in software technologies, development, and
deployment practices. They will make recommendations to responsible agency,
executive branch, and legislative officials, and to the broader software
community, about how to improve the present state of affairs and achieve future
goals.

Sponsors: Department of Defense, ONR

Approximate start date: April 2006

A Final Report will be issued at the end of the project in fall 2008.
The project may yield one or more workshop reports early in the project.

Note (11-10-08): The project duration has been extended and the final report is expected
to be issued by early 2009.

Note (10-22-10): The final report, Critical Code: Software Producibility for Defense was released in pdf form by the NAP.

Project Duration: 24 months
