Project Scope
|
The Research and Technology Coordinating Committee (FHWA) provides guidance on highway research and technology programs and activities and makes broad-based research priority recommendations, with an emphasis on the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA's) annual research program plans and budgets. The committee's scope also includes technology transfer and the implementation of research; ways and means of increasing state, local, and private-sector participation in highway research and innovation; and economic, social, energy, and environmental issues as they influence highway research policy and programs. The committee provides a mechanism for independent expert assessment of research opportunities and for considering views of research bodies, highway users, suppliers and contractors, as well as non-highway researchers dealing with similar technologies. The committee meets at least three times annually. Its letter reports are usually addressed to the FHWA, but addressees may include other organizations with a major role in highway research. In addition, the committee periodically produces more extensive reports on components of the research and innovation process and on particular research needs that have implications for or derive from policy issues, the resolution of which can be informed by research.
This project, initiated in 1991, is sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Letter reports and other reports will be issued over the course of the committee's activities during the next two years.
