Dr. Edward C. Bishop - (Chair)
HDR Engineering, Inc.

Edward C. Bishop is an expert in industrial hygiene, environmental compliance, emergency response, and risk assessment. He was formerly a vice president of Parsons Government Services, and had a 20-year career in the US Air Force, in which he held a number of positions, including senior bioenvironmental engineering program manager in the Office of the Air Force Surgeon General. In that position, he developed and managed occupational-health, industrial-hygiene, and environmental-protection programs worldwide. Dr. Bishop has served on several National Research Council committees, including the Committee on Acute Exposure Guideline Levels, the Committee on Toxicological Risks to Deployed Military Personnel, and the Committee on Potential Health Risks from Recurrent Lead Exposure of DOD Firing Range Personnel. He received his MS in engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles and his PhD in environmental health sciences from the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Deepak K. Bhalla
Wayne State University

Deepak K. Bhalla is professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Associate Dean for Research in the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Wayne State University. His research interests are in the pulmonary toxicology of air pollutants. His studies are focused on developing and characterizing animal models that simulate health consequences of air pollutants, such as ozone and cigarette smoke, on the lung. He also conducts mechanistic studies of lung disease to help elucidate early biomarkers of pulmonary injury and chronic disease and to develop protective measures. Dr. Bhalla has served on several study sections of the National Institutes of Health, as a consultant to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and was a member of the National Research Council Committee on Toxicologic and Radiologic Effects from Exposure to Depleted Uranium Before and After Combat. He is also a former president of the Inhalation Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology. He currently serves as a member of the NRC Committee on Toxicology, an associate editor of Inhalation Toxicology, and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health. Dr. Bhalla received his PhD from Howard University, and received his postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Lung Chi Chen
New York University

Lung Chi Chen is a professor in the Department of Environmental Medicine and the Director of the Inhalation Facility for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Health Sciences Center Program at the New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Chen has extensive experience in the measurement of cardiopulmonary effects of inhaled pollutants. He also works in the generation and characterization of exposure atmospheres, and in the performance of toxicology studies using all routes of exposure, primarily those involving pulmonary exposure. His research interests include nanoparticle toxicity and functional utilization, the role of health disparity in air pollution-induced cardiopulmonary diseases, gene-environment interactions in environmentally induced diseases, and effects of particulate air pollution in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Dr. Chen is the author of over 130 research papers and book chapters dealing with the mechanisms underlying adverse cardiopulmonary effects resulting from inhalation exposure to occupational and environmental air pollutants. He served as a member of the NRC Committee on Beryllium Alloy Exposures. Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. in Environmental Health Science from New York University.

Dr. Kathleen L. Gabrielson
Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions

Kathleen L. Gabrielson is an associate professor in the Department of Comparative Pathobiology and in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). Previously, Dr. Gabrielson worked in neuroscience and endocrinology research at the University of Texas, San Antonio, University of California, San Diego and the San Diego Zoo. She also worked as a diagnostic pathologist and became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. Her research at JHU focuses on the signal transduction of cardiovascular toxicities in vitro, in cardiomyocyte culture and in vivo, using rodent models. Specifically, the research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of various cancer therapies that induce cardiac toxicities. Currently she is testing prevention strategies for these toxicities. She is also studying the effect of cadmium and cigarette smoke on angiogenesis in the heart and fetal development. She directs the ultrasound lab at the JHU BRB imaging facility. Dr. Gabrielson conducted her postdoctoral fellowship in veterinary pathology at JHU School of Medicine. She received her DVM from North Carolina State University Veterinary College of Medicine and her PhD in toxicology from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Gunnar Johanson
Karolinska Institutet

Gunnar Johanson is professor of occupational toxicology and risk assessment at the Karolinska Institute. He also holds appointments as head of the Division of Work Environment Toxicology and deputy director of the Institute of Environmental Medicine. His research interests are in the use of physiologically based pharmacokinetic melds to evaluate the uptake, distribution, and acute effects of chemical exposures. His work has demonstrated that skin penetration of some organic solvents (glycol ethers) increases following dissolution in water and that the penetration of vapors of these solvents might be significant and more important than via inhalation uptake. He was a member of the National Research Council Committee on Human Biomonitoring for Environmental Toxicants. Dr. Johanson received his M.S. and Ph.D. in toxicology from the Karolinska Institute.

Dr. Margaret M. MacDonell
Argonne National Laboratory

Margaret M. MacDonell is a program manager in the Environmental Science Division of Argonne National Laboratory. She conducts environmental and health risk assessment, primarily for U.S. Department of Energy cleanup sites. She has professional interests in the cumulative risk of chemical mixtures and other hazards; toxicology, human health risk assessment, environmental risk assessment, and environmental risk communication and education. Dr. MacDonnell developed risk training workshops for environmental managers and practitioners, including individuals from state agencies and tribal nations. She collaborated with EPA’s National Homeland Security Research Center to develop acute and short-term exposure advisories for chemical, radiological, and biological contaminants released to drinking water and into buildings. Dr. MacDonell received a PhD in environmental health engineering from Northwestern University.

Mr. David A. Macys

DAVID A. MACYS served for 31 years in the U.S. Navy’s occupational and environmental health programs, retiring in 2001 as a Captain in the Medical Service Corps. Captain Macys’ last position (1999-2001) was Team Leader for Military Operational Medicine Programs and Program Officer for Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Office of Naval Research, Arlington, VA. Previously, he was assigned to the Navy Environmental Health Center, Portsmouth, VA, serving successively as Director for Environmental Programs (1994-1995), Director for Industrial Hygiene (1995-1997) and Executive Officer (1997-1999). Prior to that, he was Officer-in-Charge of the Toxicology Detachment of the Navy Medical Research Institute, located at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH (1987-1994). Earlier assignments (1970-1987) provided a broad range of experiences from field and shipboard industrial hygiene to headquarters-level management of occupational health programs. He has served on the EPA Interagency Testing Committee for the Toxic Substances Control Act, on the National Toxicology Program Interagency Committee for Chemical Evaluation and Coordination, and on numerous DoD and Navy committees. Mr. Macys received a BS in Biological Sciences from the University of California at Irvine (1969), a MS in Toxicology from the University of Rochester (1981), and a Certificate in Public Health from the University of Washington (2005). He is a diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology (1992-present). Prior to his retirement from the active practice of toxicology in 2012, he had been a diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology (1992-2012). Prior to his retirement from the active practice of industrial hygiene in 2010, he had been a diplomate of the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (1980-1986, 1993-2010). He was a member of the Threshold Limit Values for Chemical Substances Committee of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (2007-2011), and is a member of the Community Health Advisory Board for Island County, Washington.

Dr. Maria T. Morandi
University of Montana

Maria T. Morandi is research professor in the Department of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Montana. Her research interests include characterization of airborne particulate matter components; effects from airborne particulate matter and its components on clinical and cellular indicators of pulmonary and cardiovascular disease; exposure to nanoparticles; cellular-level effects of nanoparticles; association of personal exposure to airborne contaminants and early indicators of DNA damage; and associations between indicators of chemical reactivity in the atmosphere (e.g., radical formation) and health effects. Dr. Morandi has served on numerous advisory panels, including the Integrated Human Exposure and Health Effects Committees of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Science Advisory Board (SAB), EPA’s Clean Air Science Advisory Committee’s Ozone Review Panel, and the National Toxicology Program’s Boards of Scientific Councilors. She received her M.S. and Ph.D. in environmental sciences from the Norton Nelson Institute of Environmental Medicine of New York University. She is also a certified in industrial hygiene by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.

Dr. Leena A. Nylander-French
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Leena Nylander-French is professor of occupational and environmental health at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Public Health at Chapel Hill. Her research is focused on understanding the inter-relationship between inhalation and dermal exposure, the effect of work practices and work environment on the variability of biomarker levels, and the effect of individual genetic differences on the function of enzymes that detoxify hazardous agents, in order to establishing the relationship between xenobiotic exposure and mechanisms of toxicity leading to disease in quantitative exposure and risk assessment. Dr. Nylander-French was a member of the Institute of Medicine Committee on Gulf War and Health, Review of the Literature on Pesticides and Solvents, Pesticide Panel. She received her PhD in occupational and industrial hygiene from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. She is a certified industrial hygienist and a member of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists' Biological Exposure Indices Committee.

Dr. Franz Oesch
University of Mainz

Franz Oesch is emeritus professor of pharmacology and toxicology and emeritus director of the Institute of Toxicology at the University of Mainz, Germany. He has served on editorial boards of 15 journals, including Biochemical Pharmacology, Carcinogenesis, Metabolism and Disposition, Mutation Research, and Xenobiotica. He is a winner of the Professor Max Cloetta Prize (1977); Best Paper Award of the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (1980); the Robert Koch Prize (1982); GUM Prize 1985; Prize of the Rheinisch-Westfälische Academy of Sciences 1989; German Cancer Price 1990; Prize for Scientific Innovation of the State Rheinland-Pfalz 1999. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland.

Dr. Nu-May Ruby Reed
California Environmental Protection Agency [Retired]

Nu-May Ruby Reed is a staff toxicologist with the California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA) Department of Pesticide Regulation, where she is the lead person on risk-assessment issues in the Health Assessment Section. Her research interests are in evaluating health risks and developing risk assessment guidelines for pesticides. She has been on several Cal/EPA working groups that initiate, research, and revise risk-assessment guidelines and policies. Dr. Reed represented her department in task forces on community concerns and emergency response, risk-management guidance, and public education. She taught health risk assessment at the University of California, Davis for more than 15 years. Dr. Reed served on the National Research Council Subcommittee on Fluoride in Drinking Water and on the Standing Committee on Risk Analysis Issues and Reviews. She received her PhD from the University of California, Davis and is a diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology.

Dr. George C. Rodgers, Jr.
University of Louisville

George C. Rodgers, Jr. is a professor of pediatrics and pharmacology/toxicology pediatrics at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. He is board certified in pediatrics and medical technology. He served as a member of the National Advisory Committee on Acute Exposure Guideline Levels. He also served on the American Society of Safety Engineers, Z390: Accredited Standards Committee on Hydrogen Sulfide Safety Training. He is a fellow of the American College of Medical Toxicology. Dr. Rodgers was a member of the Firefighters Safety Act Technical Committee. He was president of the American Association of Poison Control Centers. He has served on committees of governmental agencies, such as EPA, ATSDR, and CDC. He served as member of the NRC Committee on Combined Exposures to Hydrogen Cyanide and Carbon Monoxide in Army Operations. Dr. Rodgers received his Ph.D. from Yale University and his M.D. from the State University of New York at Syracuse.

Dr. Robert Snyder
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick

Robert Snyder is Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, Rutgers the State University of New Jersey and is the former Director of the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute, Piscataway, NJ. Dr. Snyder’s research focuses on mechanisms of the noncancer and cancer effects of benzene. He has served or is serving on the NRC Committee on Toxicology, the Committee on Tetrachloroethylene, and the Committee on Spacecraft Maximum Allowable Concentrations. He chaired the Committee on Chronic Reference Doses for Selected Chemical-Warfare Agents and the Committee on Alkylbenzenes. Dr. Snyder has published more than 100 articles and book chapters on the toxicology of benzene and various other substances and is the co-editor, with Dr. Helmut Greim, of the textbook entitled “Introduction to Toxicology and Risk Assessment.” In 1998, he was President of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences and in 2002 he was president of the American College of Toxicology. In 1991, Dr. Snyder was the winner of the Humbolt Research Award for Senior U.S. Scientists. In 1996, he won the Society of Toxicology Education Award. Dr. Snyder received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the State University of New York at Syracuse.

Dr. Kenneth R. Still
Occupational Toxicology Associates, Inc. [Retired]

Kenneth R. Still is a retired U.S. Navy Captain in the Medical Service Corps. Dr. Still served as the Senior Director of Safety and Occupational Health for the Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as well as the Officer-In-Charge of the Navy’s only Toxicology Research laboratory Program in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Still retired from the U.S. Navy in November 2005 and is currently the Scientific Director and toxicology consultant for Occupational Toxicology Associates, Inc., chairs an Independent Toxicology Panel for an International corporation, and provides consulting services for several DoD programs, including the Breast Cancer Research Program under the aegis of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program. Dr. Still has held numerous adjunct faculty/associate professorships including the John Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii, and the Uniform Services University of Health Sciences, Bethesda, Maryland. He held a visiting research scientist appointment at the Naval Health Research Center Environmental Health Effects Laboratory in Dayton, Ohio, for several years. Dr. Still’s main research interests include human health risk assessment, exposure assessment, and regulatory and mechanistic toxicology. His research addresses the areas of neurobehavioral, reproductive, inhalation/respiratory, biochemical, and occupational toxicology. He received the Vice President Al Gore Hammer Award for Reinventing Government for work on the Environmental Protection Agency Acute Exposure Guidelines. Dr. Still has more than 250 publications in the areas of his research. Dr. Still holds certifications in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene, safety, hazardous materials management, and several environmental arenas. Dr. Still is a Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences and the American Industrial Hygiene Association. He has served as a liaison on numerous committees for the National Academies which have addressed the topics of toxicology hazard evaluation, reproductive and developmental toxicants, and acute exposure guidelines. Dr. Still has also served on many working groups for governmental agencies. Dr. Still received his M.B.A. in financial management from Chaminade University of Honolulu and his PhD in Chemical and Physiological Ecology from Oklahoma State University.
