Dr. Ann L. Lee - (Co-Chair)
Genentech, Inc.

Ann L. Lee is vice president for Process Development. In this role, she is responsible for the development, implementation and support of clinical and commercial production processes and technologies. Lee leads cell culture, purification, formulation, devices, packaging, analytical development, project management and pilot plant operations teams.

Lee joined Genentech in 2005. Prior to Genentech, Lee was employed by Merck & Co., Inc., for 16 years where she held several leadership positions in vaccine development in the Merck Research Laboratories, and then served as Vice President, Chemical Technology and Engineering responsible for global chemical technical support and process engineering in the manufacturing division. During her tenure at Merck, she contributed to the development of a number of vaccines including Liquid PedvaxHIB®, COMVAX®, PNEUMOVAX®23, GARDASIL®, as well as clinical candidates and drug products.

Lee is an author on more than 35 scientific articles and an inventor on three issued patents and numerous patent applications. She is a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, and serves on several academic and scientific advisory boards. She is Associate Editor of Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry.

Lee holds a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Cornell University, and Master of Science, Master of Philosophy and doctorate degrees in biochemical engineering from Yale University.

Dr. Amy E. Alving
Science Applications International Corporation

AMY E. ALVING is Chief Technology Officer, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). Dr. Alving joined SAIC in 2005 as the chief technology officer for the Engineering, Training and Logistics Group and later served as the corporate Chief Scientist. Prior to this, she served as the director of the Special Projects Office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), where she was responsible for strategic planning, operations, finances, security and program development and execution. Alving was a White House Fellow serving at the Department of Commerce from 1997 to 1998. Prior to that, she was an associate professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Minnesota, where she taught mechanics, fluids and experimental methods, served as a thesis advisor to graduate students and conducted research. Alving graduated from Princeton University in 1988 with a Ph.D. in mechanical and aerospace engineering and has a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University.

Dr. Robert P. Casillas
Battelle Memorial Institute

ROBERT P. CASILLAS is Vice President and Manager of Battelle’s Biomedical Science and Technology Product Line. He is responsible for a multi-million dollar annual business volume and supervision of over 230 personnel located at Research Centers in Ohio and Maryland. Dr. Casillas specializes in medical countermeasures against the full spectrum of Chemical Threat Agents which includes Chemical Warfare Agents, and Biosafety Level-3 Biological Threat Agents which includes Biological Warfare Agents. His expertise includes: Chemical and Biological Warfare (CBW)/bioterrorism defense, skin toxicology, mammalian and microbial xenobiotic metabolism, and environmental toxicology. Prior to Battelle, Dr. Casillas served on active duty with the U.S. Army in a national level Joint Services position, and provided written and oral scientific recommendations to U.S. senior policy makers to combat the military and national CBW threat. Dr. Casillas also served at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense and successfully directed a multi-million dollar research program resulting in two animal models of cutaneous sulfur mustard (SM) injury against liquid or vapor challenge, and identified drugs that protect against SM skin injury as long as 2 h after exposure. Dr. Casillas has been invited to speak in his area of expertise for 27 meetings, including NATO and other international meetings. He is an author/co-author of 45 publications and 57 abstracts, editor for Cutaneous and Ocular Toxicology, and ad hoc editor for several other toxicology journals. Dr. Casillas is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Wright State University's Boonshoft School of Medicine, Dayton, Ohio. He serves on Battelle's Multicultural Employee Resource Group, and is a member of the Society of Toxicology and its Dermal Toxicology and Hispanic Toxicologists Specialty Sections. He received a B.S. in microbiology and a Ph.D. in microbial biochemistry from Georgia State University, and did post-doctoral research in molecular toxicology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Department of Biochemistry.

Dr. Celeste A. Clark
Kellogg Company

CELESTE A. CLARK is Senior Vice President of Global Nutrition and Corporate Affairs, Kellogg Company. She is a company worldwide liaison between Kellogg and professional associations, government agencies, and trade associations on nutrition health policy and advertising practices. She joined Kellogg in 1977 and served in several roles of increasing responsibility before being appointed to Vice President, Worldwide Nutrition Marketing in 1996 and then to Senior Vice President, Nutrition and Marketing Communications, Kellogg USA in 1999. She was appointed to Vice President, Corporate and Scientific Affairs in October 2002, and to Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs in August 2003. She was named Outstanding Young Alumnus, Iowa State University in 1981; Professional Woman of the Year by local branch of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Organization in 1986; one of 100 of the most promising black women in corporate America by Ebony Magazine in 1991. She received her B.S. from Southern University in 1975 in Food and Nutrition, and her M.S. from Iowa State University in 1977 in Nutrition, and Ph.D. from Michigan State University in Food Science. She serves on the Food Forum for IOM and the WHO Industry Group. She also chairs the International Food Information Council Board of Directors and is involved in numerous health professional and civic organizations.

Dr. Richard B. Freeman
Harvard University

RICHARD B. FREEMAN holds the Herbert Ascherman Chair in Economics at Harvard University. He is currently serving as Faculty Co-Chair of the Harvard University Trade Union Program. He is also director of the Labor Studies Program at the National Bureau of Economic Research, Senior Research Fellow in Labor Markets at the London School of Economics' Centre for Economic Performance, and visiting professor at the London School of Economics. Professor Freeman is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of Sigma Xi. He has served on five panels of the National Academy of Sciences, including the Committee on National Needs for Biomedical and Behavioral Scientists. He has published over 300 articles dealing with a wide range of research interests including the job market for scientists and engineers; the growth and decline of unions; the effects of immigration and trade on inequality; restructuring European welfare states; Chinese labor markets; transitional economies; youth labor market problems; crime; self-organizing non-unions in the labor market; employee involvement programs; and income distribution and equity in the marketplace. He is currently directing the NBER / Sloan Science Engineering Workforce Project and a LSE research program on the effects of the internet on labor markets, social behavior and the economy. In addition, he has written or edited over 25 books, including Emerging Labor Market Institutions for the 21st Century (2004), Can Labor Standards Improve Under Globalization? w/ Kimberly Ann Elliott (2003), Youth Employment and Joblessness in Advanced Countries (2000), and Immigration and the Work Force: Economic Consequences for the United States and Source Areas (1992). He received his B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1964 and his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University in 1969. He currently serves on Committee on Competitiveness and Workforce Needs of United States Industry for STEP.

Ms. Lueny Morell
Hewlett-Packard Company

Lueny Morell is currently Director of Engineering Education Innovation Worldwide for HP Laboratories (HP Labs), Hewlett Packard Company (HP). A licensed professional engineer, she holds a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez and an MS degree in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University. She is responsible for developing engineering education, curriculum innovation and development initiatives and student programs worldwide in support of HPL research and technology areas. From 2002 to 2008, she was Director of HP University Relations for Latin America responsible for developing and strengthening HP’s ties to a select number of institutions in Latin America. Her job included brokering research partnerships in areas of interest to HP Labs, broadening funding opportunities through public/private partnerships, participating in major sales efforts to build HP business and brand, facilitating access to top talent in key growth areas; partnering with industry, government, and academia to improve collaboration, accelerating knowledge transfer, and fostering capacity-building in support of economic development. She also engaged and partnered with leading research institutions and S&T education organizations around the world to drive innovation, quality assurance and diversity in engineering and science education. Before joining HP in 2002, Lueny had a 24 year career at the University of Puerto Rico, holding various positions at the Mayagüez Campus (UPRM) as well as at the system level. A full professor of Chemical Engineering, during her tenure at UPRM she was Director of UPRM’s Research & Development Center, elected member to the Academic Senate and Administrative Board, Special Assistant to the Chancellor and the Dean of Engineering in charge of strategic alliances, new educational initiatives and outcomes assessment, including coordinating the ABET 2000 accreditation responsibilities. At the UPR system, Lueny was part of the staff of the Vice President of the University of Puerto Rico System, coordinating the implementation of a UPR system-wide institutional research function, and Director of the Curriculum Innovation Center of the Puerto Rico Alliance for Minority Participation (PR-AMP) Project. Lueny was also Project Director for various NASA and NSF multidisciplinary curriculum innovation grants involving strong industry partnerships. A founding member of the Puerto Rico TechnoEconomic Corridor, a multi sectorial initiative to foster economic development based on high technology, she is member of the following local, national and international advisory boards: Cal Poly San Luis Obispo CoE Advisory Board, Worcester Polytechnic Board of Trustees, the Southern States Technology Board (appointed by the PR Secretary of Economic Development), Northeastern University’s NSF-sponsored Connections Project. More recently Lueny has provided leadership in Puerto Rico in the island’s quest for a knowledge based economy creating the island’s Science and Technology Trust Fund which provides funds to sponsor competitive R&D in CIT and Life sciences for universities and corporations. She is co-founder and member of the Engineer of the Americas Task Force, a group leading quality assurance and mobility of professionals in the Americas, and selected to participate in developing the engineering action agenda for the US by the National Academy of Engineering. Lueny is a member of the Capacity Building Committee of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), member of the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Engineering Education Societies, the US NSF International Advisory Committee for Science and Engineering, the Pan American Academy of Engineering, the Women in Engineering Programs Advocates Network (WEPAN) Board of Directors and has received various honors during her academic career, including the prestigious Bernard M. Gordon Prize for innovation in engineering and technology education given by the US National Academy of Engineering in 2006.

Mr. Richard D. Stephens
The Boeing Company

RICHARD STEPHENS is Senior Vice President for Human Resources and Administration, The Boeing Company. A 28 year Boeing veteran, Stephens oversees all leadership development, training, employee relations, compensation, benefits, Global Corporate Citizenship, and diversity initiatives at the Chicago-based, $61.5 billion, 158,000-person commercial airplane and defense company. Stephens was appointed to lead companywide Human Resources and Administration in September 2005. He previously served as senior vice president of Internal Services and president, Shared Services Group. Prior to these assignments he was vice president and general manager, Integrated Defense Systems Homeland Security and Services and has led a number of service and support-related programs such as Space and Communication Services, Reusable Space Systems, Naval Systems and Tactical Systems, Space Shuttle and submarine combat systems. He received the American Indian Science & Engineering Society’s 2004 Professional of the Year Award and was appointed to the Secretary of Education's Commission on the Future of Higher Education. In 2006, Stephens was appointed by President Bush to serve as a member of the President's Board of Advisors on Tribal Colleges and Universities. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, a member of the National Science Resource Center Advisory Board, and is chairman of the Illinois Business Roundtable. Stephens also serves as the Boeing executive focal for the University of Southern California and is vice chair of Healthcare for the Orange County Business Council. Stephens received his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics in 1974 from the University of Southern California and his Master of Science degree in computer science in 1984 from California State University, Fullerton. Stephens is an enrolled member of the Pala Band of Mission Indians and served as its chairman from 1988-89. He serves on the Advisory Board for the National Science Resources Center.

Dr. Herman B. White, Jr.
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory

HERMAN B. WHITE is a Scientist at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. He is an expert in particle physics and the only African American in his field at this facility. He completed his bachelor’s degree at Earlham College, master’s degree at Michigan State University, and Ph.D. at Florida State University, all in Physics. He was a Resident Research Associate in Nuclear Physics at Argonne National Laboratory, an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation travel fellow at the CERN Laboratory for particle physics research in Geneva, Switzerland, and University Fellow in Physics at Yale University. His research has covered a range of topics in particle and nuclear physics including Neutrino and Kaon physics, as well as work with Accelerators and Particle Beams. He has been involved with many communication efforts to bring information, concerns, and focus about the workforce as well as physics and physical science research to the U.S. Congress and governmental agencies. He has also made invited presentations to business and law school students at the University of Caen in Normandy, France on the value of science in their professions. Dr. White has mentored and interacted with underrepresented minority students who participate in Fermilab's pioneering internship program since 1974, and has a working relationship with a number of minority serving institutions to encourage more under-served students to enter the scientific workforce. He has served on the American Physical Society (APS) National Committee on Minorities in Physics, APS International Physics Group, and is also an Adjunct Professor of Physics at North Central College in Naperville, IL. Dr. White also serves on the joint U.S. Department of Energy/National Science Foundation High Energy Physics Advisory Panel, and on a number of institional Boards of Directors.

Dr. Mauricio Futran
Bristol-Myers Squibb Company

Mauricio Futran is Vice President, Process Research and Development, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company where is responsible for leading the process development area, leading on-going improvements for rapid increase in projects with decreasing timelines, and incorporating Quality by Design and other technology based approaches. He is responsible for small molecule API development from interface with discovery to manufacturing validation. Prior to joining Bristol-Myers Squibb, Futran held positions with Merck Research Labs and Maquinaria Plastica, Morderna in Mexico. He has published in journals such as the Journal of Chemical Physics, made invited presentations at national scientific meetings, and lectured at universities such as Harvard University and North Carolina State University. He holds two patents, “Crystallization Method to improve Crystal Structure and Size” and “Process for Producing N-Amino-1Hydroxyalkylidene-1, 1-bisphosphonic acids”. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Chemical Society, and BCST. In addition, he serves as chair of the chemical engineering advisory board at Princeton University. He received the bachelors and master’s of science in chemical engineering from Rice University and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Princeton University.
