Project Title:

Climate, Energy, and National Security: Panel on the Cryosphere
PIN: BASC-U-08-02-E

Major Unit:

Division on Earth and Life Studies

Sub Unit: Board on Atmospheric Sciences & Climate

RSO: Elfring, Chris

Subject/Focus Area:

Project Scope
The National Academy of Sciences (NAS), through its National Research Council (NRC), is facilitating the increased involvement of scientists in answering questions related to climate and environmental change, energy, natural disasters, and national security. The goal is both to advance scientific understanding of global climate and other environmental and disaster-related phenomena, and consider the implications for both fundamental scientific understanding and national security.

The Panel on the Cryosphere will participate in these activities as one of eight Topical Panels in areas related to land surface (including agriculture), atmosphere, snow and ice, hydrology, biological and chemical aspects of oceans, physical aspects of oceans, human dimensions of global change, and natural disasters.

As a first task, the Panel will:

1. Provide scientific input on the development of a tentative suite of indicators, measurements (including locations around the globe), and metrics that are most important for understanding global climate change and for assessing environmental sustainability issues. This information could be useful in consideration of a coordinated climate observing strategy.

The approximate start date for this activity is March 30, 2009.

Project Duration: 24 months
